Enhancing Hydration Awareness for Dementia Care
Home Instead, Watford
Home Instead Watford, a leading provider of home care services, recognised a critical need to support families and caregivers of individuals living with dementia in managing hydration. Dehydration is a common but often overlooked issue in dementia care, which can lead to confusion, infections, and hospitalisation. The organisation partnered with Sarah to design and deliver targeted training focused on improving hydration for clients with dementia.
The objective was simple. Educate family members on the importance of hydration for loved ones living with dementia. Equip professional caregivers with practical strategies to encourage fluid intake in clients. Raise awareness of common barriers to hydration in dementia care and ways to overcome them. The Sessions were hosted at Carpenters Park Care Home and the Home Instead Watford offices, where a high attendance for both was seen.
The interactive workshops for families covered signs of dehydration, the role of hydration in cognitive and physical health, and simple methods to encourage regular fluid intake. Participants reported increased confidence in managing hydration for their loved ones. They also said the workshop had helped them improve their understand of the importance of hydration and were able to implement proactive strategies. The workshops for professional carers received specialised training on monitoring hydration levels, adapting fluid provision to client preferences, and creatively integrating hydration into daily routines. These sessions were particularly valuable as carers often don’t have the opportunity to meet colleagues from different shifts or locations. The workshops provided a safe space for sharing stories, discussing challenges, and learning about clients they might not otherwise encounter. The session was recorded so that live-in carers who were unable to attend could watch it at their convenience.
What was great about these sessions was how carers came together with their peers, exchanged experiences, and discussed approaches for clients they might not directly care for, fostering a sense of community and shared learning. Feedback from everyone said that clients exhibited better overall hydration, leading to improved wellbeing and reduced incidences of dehydration-related complications. The hydration training initiative at Home Instead Watford successfully bridged knowledge gaps among carers and families, empowering them to proactively support the health and comfort of individuals living with dementia.
By combining educational content with interactive discussion and peer connection, the program enhanced both practical skills and professional community, demonstrating the powerful impact of collaborative learning in dementia care.
