Nutrition and Substance Abuse Training

Emerging Futures, Watford

Emerging Futures provides vital support for individuals affected by substance abuse, aiming to empower them through education, skill development, and peer support. Recognising the importance of nutrition in recovery, the organisation partnered with Sarah to deliver training on healthy eating and its connection to physical and mental wellbeing for volunteers who were themselves in recovery.

The objective was simple; Educate volunteers on the importance of nutrition in supporting recovery from substance abuse. Provide practical tools for incorporating healthy eating into daily routines for both volunteers and clients. Encourage peer-led learning and engagement, leveraging the lived experience of volunteers to enhance understanding and empathy. The training was delivered to volunteers who had personal experience with addiction and were committed to supporting others in their recovery journey. Their shared experiences offered a unique and valuable perspective on the challenges and realities of life in recovery.

Sarah’s sessions combined nutritional education with discussions about substance abuse, exploring how diet impacts both physical health and mental wellbeing. Volunteers were encouraged to share their experiences, which in turn created a safe space for mutual support.

The sessions themselves led to the creation of a cookery book designed to support healthy eating habits. Volunteers actively engaged with clients in practical cooking sessions within the residential houses, promoting the preparation of nutritious meals while reinforcing positive mental health practices. Volunteers gained increased knowledge about nutrition and its role in recovery, translating learning into practical guidance for clients. The cooking sessions with clients encouraged them to try healthier eating habits, it enhanced social interaction and supported mental wellbeing. The cookery book became both a practical resource and a motivational tool, allowing knowledge to be shared beyond the immediate training sessions.

The sessions successfully combined education, lived experience, and practical application to create meaningful outcomes for both volunteers and clients. By integrating knowledge, peer support, and hands-on activities, the initiative fostered healthier lifestyles, supported mental wellbeing, and empowered volunteers to become confident advocates and role models in the recovery community.
