Promoting Healthy Eating
Healthy Eating Workshop, South Oxey Daycare Centre
South Oxhey Day Care Centre needed a healthy eating workshop targeting a group of women who had limited exposure to balanced diets. Partnering with Sarah, the centre developed interactive nutrition sessions aimed at increasing awareness of healthy eating while providing enjoyable, hands-on experiences with food preparation.
The objectives were – To raise awareness among staff and clients about the benefits of a healthy, balanced diet. Encourage client participation in meal preparation to boost confidence and engagement. Create social opportunities through shared cooking and dining experiences.
Sarah’s multifaceted approach to nutrition meant there were more than one way of delivering the needs of the client brief.
Interactive Cooking Sessions: Clients were introduced to simple, nutritious meals, enjoying the process of cooking while learning about healthy ingredients. Participation was encouraged at every stage—stirring on the stove, assisting with preparation, and even washing up—helping clients gain confidence and a sense of achievement.
Expanded Activities through Funding: Additional funding allowed the development of a “Meet and Eat” group held at the local church hall. Clients were transported to the venue, supported by staff, and given the opportunity to socialize with others outside the day centre.
Volunteer Support: Our volunteer chef, Steve, played a central role in the sessions, bringing expertise, enthusiasm, and a genuine connection with the clients. His engagement helped make cooking fun and interactive, inspiring both staff and clients.
What was great about this project was how participants grew in confidence which in turn gave them a newfound willingness to try new foods and participate in meal preparation. Participants actively engaged with the cooking process, trying new meals and developing practical skills in the kitchen. The introduction of the Meet and Eat sessions helped aid social interaction, reducing isolation and encouraging shared experiences with peers and community members. Staff, led by the exceptional support of manager Tracey, were empowered to think creatively about nutrition, finding new ways to involve clients and sustain the initiative.
The collaboration with South Oxhey Day Care Centre successfully promoted healthier eating while providing clients with valuable life skills and social opportunities.
Through practical, hands-on activities, supported by passionate staff and volunteers, clients gained confidence in the kitchen, enjoyed nutritious meals, and developed stronger connections with both peers and the wider community.
